All about that base (II)
Monday, February 20, 2017 / 9:47 AM

Hey guys, sorry about that hiatus yet again haha.
Over this short break I've managed to try a few more bases so I thought I'll talk a little more about this topic before moving on to another category.

But before we move onto that, thank you so much for the reader email once again!
It was very interesting to read about your experiences, keep dem emails coming ^^

Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation
In the previous post I forgot to mention about this product because I seldom use it plus it wasn't something that I bought so it has just been sitting in my make up pouch somewhere, often forgotten.

Overall a pretty good product. I'd say it has pretty good coverage and gives a perfect looking, powdery matte finish if glowy skin is not your thing. However, because it is powder foundation, I do not think it is a good product for people with dry skin.

Great thing about this product though, is that it comes in a great variety of shades! A total of 14 to be exact! Such a culture shock from korean cosmetics which seldom stray far from their usual no.21 (Fair) and no.23 (Natural) which are, in my opinion, both pretty light shades that definitely does not suit everyone, even some of the koreans. Judging from the awkward difference in shades between some of their faces and necks. oops.

Anyway, the reason why I seldom use this product is because the shade that I have (Light Neutral) is kinda dull on me and that makes me look kinda sick for some reason and I don't like it. Plus I guess I'm already used to that slightly 'sticky' feeling that 'glowy products' usually gives so a powdery finish is just kinda weird for me haha.

Nature Republic Nature Origin Cushion CC

Lasting Power: ★ ★ ☆

This is actually the first time I deviated from my Laneige BB cushion to try another cushion and at first I naively thought "okay, all cushions are probably the same. They all look about the same so how different could they be right?" but boy, I thought wrong.
There really is a diff between different cushions, my friends.

Overall, I liked how simple and classic the packaging looked, very natural, living up to their name. What I didn't like so much was what was inside. Firstly, the formula was very watery, much to my surprise as I was used to the density of the Laneige one. How should I describe this...
Remember when we used to paint when we were kids? So imagine you have one of those plastic palettes with the small dents for your paint and one of them was filled with water and after painting your favourite mermaid princess's face beige (because that was always the colour we go for for skin tone at that age amiright?), you wash your brush in that little dent with water.
yes thats how watery the formula is.
Which I guess is good for everyday wear, especially on those days you don't feel like putting on too much make up but still want to cover the basics. Its so super lightweight but, my friends, the other side of the coin is of course the lack of coverage.

Another thing that also get along well with me would be its sponge. I remember how horrified I was when I went to buy a Laneige sponge and it costs me 5 bucks. Oh wait since we're on this topic, is it just me or Laneige sponge spoils easily? Mine always end up falling apart near the end of the refill pack like excuse me I'm not done yet guys?!? just hang in there a bit more?!!
wait what were we talking about here...
Right the Nature Republic cushion sponge. Its soooooo thin I could nearly feel my fingerprints on my cheeks with each pat. I am, of course, exaggerating but yes the sponge is thin.

Okay, by now you can probably tell that in my ranking of korean road shop cosmetics, Nature Republic is not the first. Nor the second. (Maybe I'll do a post on my personal ranking of Korean cosmetics next time! Would you guys like to read about that? Send me an email!)

PONY EFFECT Everlasting Cushion Foundation
As mentioned in the previous post, I was over the moon when my favourite make up artist Pony came up with her own line of make up but was slightly disappointed with the seamless foundation that I got so I wasn't too excited when she came up with these cushion foundations and other bases. However,
while watching this other youtuber (Edward Avila - watching his reviews is one of my guilty pleasures I have to say hahaha) review a whole bunch of cushions and the greeeeaat review he gave for this Pony Effect one, I decided to give it a try.

Overall, it really is a great product! I especially love the packaging. I mean hello, just look at how sleek and chic it is, all dark and mysterious with its rounded edges and magnetic opening instead of the usual click shut ones.
Formula wise, I guess it is an improvement from the seamless foundation as it is slightly denser. A little bit of product can go a long way but the colours are the same 5 as the other one. And somehow it leaves a really nice finish and makes your skin look so good in pictures.

And the sponge is SO SPONGEY, sorry for the lack of vocabulary here.
Okay if I were to compare the 3 sponges, the NR one is like 2 layers of crepe, the Laneige one is like a layer of sponge cake while the PE one is like the dough layer of a dorayaki. Does that make sense?

However, one thing that I dont get is the lack of a mirror. Instead of a mirror its just this matte surface that looks like I haven't peel off the layer of protective sticker above the mirror. Even though I rarely make use of the compact mirror in these things but it still kinda bothers me.
Another downside is that this cushion is also kinda on the pricey side.

Well okay I guess that's the end of this foundation post! Maybe I'll continue to try other foundations but so far the Pony Effect one is my favourite.
Next post I'll be talking about brow products so stay tuned!

With love, T.L.T.
You know I'm all about that base~

Hey guys! Sorry for the extreeeemely long hiatus, so many things came up and I wasn't able to catch up on this space.

Before we touch on the new post, a reader has wrote in a feedback regarding the previous post on scrubs:

"I've never heard of a moisturiser that can double as a toner before! Sounds interesting. And wow, your routine! Must be really hard to keep track of all that needs to be done! I hardly exfoliate once a week and tend to forget to mask too... I normally only do so after I wear makeup which isn't all that often. Plus my skin is pretty dry and sensitive so I'm using the Cure aqua gel for exfoliation which is pretty gentle so I can exfoliate more than once a week XD It's also pretty good? And it feels like it lasts forever cause one pump is more than enough for your face. And you can also use it on other body parts like elbows etc

Once again, the blog posts were GREAT and here's to looking forward to more posts~"

Thank you so much for your email!
To those that don't know about the product that this reader has mentioned, it is a fragrance-free, color free and preservative free exfoliation product that is very gentle on the skin as compared to most exfoliation products out there.

(For more information you can check out their website over here.)

I would recommend this to those who have dry skin or people who have skin that is slightly more sensitive as it is a really gentle product yet does a good job of exfoliation. Just remember not to overdo it! You can easily find this product in drugstores such as Watsons but the thing is that this product is a little on the pricey side at about 40 plus SGD per bottle. However, during certain sales period it might be on 10% discount at Watsons outlet so it'll be a good time to purchase the product if you're interested!

Now let's get on to business!
Today we're going to be talking about foundations, BB creams and such. I don't know about you guys but my first make up product that I bought was a BB cream from The Face Shop which I bought sometime after JC when I thought I should start learning about make-up.

I had zero idea what i should do or buy and I guess at that time I thought I should start with foundation and I heard BB creams were popular at that time so I got my friend to go shopping with me and after listening to her and the sales lady, I chose this in the end.

The Face Shop AQUA TINTED BB cream

The me at that time had no idea that it was a shade too light for me haha. All I knew was that it was apparently moisturising and moisturising is always a good thing.... right??

Overall, it was a very light weight product which is great for everyday wear if you have perfect skin which also happens to be very fair. If I remember correctly, I bought it in this shade because it was the only shade available. Anyway, I'm not sure if this product is still on the shelves but most likely not as it has already been a few years.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Laneige BB Cushion
A couple of years after that I managed to get some Laneige samples while walking past their ION outlet one day and I got to try out their Water Sleeping Mask samples and BB cushion samples which came in a really cute packaging with a cute tiny sponge which probably look like this nowadays.

I was like hey these are really not bad! So I promised myself to get the BB cushion on my next payday and the water sleeping mask on my next next pay day and I'm still using both products up to today! When I bought my first BB cushion it was still in this plain packaging.

Which has now evolved to a much prettier packaging in 2016.

They also came up with 8 shades instead of the original 4. Wow, Laneige!

(Just a little tidbit if you don't already know, Laneige is under Amore Pacific Corporation, which is the mother of a variety of other well known korean cosmetics including HERA, Sulwhasoo, IOPE, Mamonde, Etude House, Innisfree, Espoir etc just to name a few.)

Overall a not bad product that is still my go-to up to today. However, it might not work for everybody, especially those that have dry skin. Personally, my skin is kinda on the oily side so in general it is okay but on certain areas (e.g. over troubled skin) it tends to dry out after a few hours and would require some touch up. Unlike the previous The Face Shop BB cream, this product is unscented and I personally feel that there is a sort of light metallic-ish smell upon application and if you're not okay with that I think you should try another product instead.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nature Republic Super Origin CC Cream (Colour Change)
When I went to korea in 2014, I bought this to try out as it was on sale and I was really curious as to how CC cream works, like do they really adjust to a shade similar to everyone's skin upon application??

And it does! I'm still amazed hahaha.

Overall, a product that I wouldn't buy again as it has very little coverage. I'd only put it on on days which my skin is not too bad and I don't feel like putting on make-up yet is unwillingly to leave house with completely no make up on.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nature Republic Botanical Vanilla Foundation
Bought this in 2015 when I went to Korea again as it was pretty cheap and I wanted to try something with more coverage.

It is already approaching the end of 2016 and I have YET to wear this product out. The reason being that when I tried it at home once, I was really really surprised at how thick it was. I put a drip of it on the back of my hand once and I could spread it across a reaaally big area and I was like omg I don't think I wanna put this on my face. Perhaps I'll give it another chance soon and update you guys again regarding how that goes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PONY EFFECT Seamless Foundation
Not willing to give up on my quest to find a foundation, my favourite youtube make up artist, PONY, came up with her own line of cosmetics and I was over the moon to say the least. Image result for pony effect seamless foundation
I mean, come on, look at how pretty the packaging is!! Frosted glass with rose gold and it comes in 5 shades which all sounded so pretty. (Or am I just biased? haha)

Coverage: ☆
Breathability: ★ ★ ☆
Colour: ★ ★ ★
Lasting Power: ★ ★

I got myself Rosy Beige which is already one of the darker shades and it was still a little fair for my skin but now that I know that I should blend the product on my neck as well, it doesn't look too bad. It has a nicer colour than my laneige BB cushion which I had always bought in Natural Beige, which tends to be fair rather than beige-y.

However, I have to say that this product has practically zero coverage which was pretty disappointing but its really watery so I guess its a trade off if you prefer light weight rather than coverage. I usually put on like 2 layers of this before putting concealer and I think... a layer of the Laneige BB cushion has more coverage that 2 layers of this which is saying quite a bit because that one does not have that much coverage either haha. I love Pony but I wouldn't buy this again. This product would only be good if you originally have pretty good skin and just wanna balance out the colour across your face.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With that, I've come to the end of this post but definitely not the end of my quest to find that perfect base for me. I would love to hear your stories about great or not so great bases that you guys have used before and if you would like to share, do not hesitate to write in to me via email!
